NA Chairman attends ceremony marking 140th International Workers’ Day

VOV.VN - National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on April 28 attended a ceremony in Hanoi marking the 140th anniversary of International Workers’ Day and honouring 101 outstanding grassroots trade union leaders for their work in dialogue and collective bargaining in 2026.

Speaking at the event, he called on trade unions at all levels to firmly grasp their tasks, focus on raising labour productivity and aim for double-digit growth, while advancing innovation, practising thrift, improving working methods and strengthening the application of science and technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

He said Vietnam’s working class has clearly affirmed its role as a core force at the forefront of industrialisation, modernisation and international integration. The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour has affirmed its role as a broad socio-political organisation of the working class and a reliable support for union members and workers, with activities becoming more practical and effective, helping better protect their legitimate rights and interests.

Trade unions have actively contributed to building and improving policies and laws related to workers, while strengthening dialogue and collective bargaining. Each year, tens of thousands of dialogue sessions are held, promptly resolving thousands of workers’ petitions, and many collective labour agreements are signed, contributing to improved working conditions and higher incomes and benefits.

He said the recognition of 101 grassroots union leaders showed the implementation of directions by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on regular dialogue, substantive collective bargaining and the protection of workers’ rights.

Looking ahead, he called on trade unions to thoroughly implement resolutions of the Party, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, and to build a contingent of union officials with strong political resolve, responsibility and close ties with workers, with a firm grasp of enterprise developments and strong professional skills, while renewing working methods and improving the effectiveness of dialogue and collective bargaining.

Trade unions were also urged to take part in building and improving policies and laws related to workers, contribute to anti-corruption and anti-waste efforts, and help build a clean and strong political system, while preparing for the 14th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour for the 2026-2031 term.

He also called on Party committees, state agencies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and relevant organisations to continue to coordinate and create conditions for trade unions to operate effectively.

The ceremony, he said, is an occasion to reaffirm the enduring value of International Workers’ Day, rekindle pride in the traditions of the working class and trade unions, and create new momentum to continue building a modern working class and a strong trade union system, thereby contributing to national development.
