Meeting seeks to enhance Vietnam-Singapore defence ties

VOV.VN - Director of the Foreign Relations Department at the Ministry of Defence Lieut. Gen. Vu Chien Thang co-chaired an online meeting on August 13 alongside Director of Defence Policy Office of Singapore Col. Amos Yeo.

The two sides both agreed to take steps to overcome hurdles caused by the raging novel coronavirus pandemic in an effort to accelerate the implementation of defence co-operation between both sides moving forward, while seeking suitable co-operation measures amid a new context.

The pair also touched upon the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) relating to bilateral defence co-operation based on a previous document signed back in September, 2009.

During forthcoming meetings, defence officers from the two nations will continue to compare notes on the draft MoU.

Furthermore, the online meeting saw both sides underline the importance and efficiency of the defence policy dialogue mechanism at a deputy ministerial level, in addition to the joint working group.

They stated their appreciation for co-operation outcomes following the seventh meeting of the joint working group held in May, 2019, between the two Defence Ministries.

They outlined the practical and effective activities implemented as a result of previous joint efforts, including delegation exchanges, training, and co-operation in both naval and air forces, army medical corps, and consultation for the country’s ASEAN Chairmanship Year 2020.

Singapore has also pledged to closely collaborate alongside the nation at multilateral forums to bolster co-operation within the ASEAN framework and support Vietnam to successfully perform its role as ASEAN Chair this year.
