Lao, Vietnamese PMs discuss strengthening bilateral ties

VOV.VN - Pasaxon, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, recently reported that Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone held a bilateral meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Le Minh Hung in Cebu, the Philippines, on May 8 while attending the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings held from May 7-8.

At the meeting, the two PMs said they were pleased to meet officially for the first time, showing the continuation of the long-standing friendship tradition between the two countries while reaffirming the solidarity, close ties and mutual trust in the “unique” special relationship between Laos and Vietnam.

The two sides highly valued the continued deepening of the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion between the two countries across all fields in recent years.

They noted that political, defence and security cooperation has continued to grow stronger, serving as a solid pillar for bilateral relations, while economic cooperation has also seen encouraging progress and achieved more substantive results.

Both sides agreed to work closely together in preparing activities marking the Laos-Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Year, as well as two major historical anniversaries in 2027, namely the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

They also consented to continue realizing the outcomes of the meeting between the two Politburos and the results of the 48th session of the Laos-Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee, particularly in accelerating strategic cooperation projects, including connectivity projects, to ensure substantive progress and practical effectiveness.

On this occasion, on behalf of the Lao Party, State and people, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone congratulated Vietnam on the success of the first session of the 16th National Assembly in April and congratulated Le Minh Hung on being entrusted by the Vietnamese Party, State and people with the position of PM.

He also expressed gratitude to the Vietnamese Party, State and people for their valuable, timely and effective support for Laos over the years, reaffirming the spirit of solidarity reflected in the saying “sharing half a grain of rice and splitting a stalk of vegetables in half” between the Lao and Vietnamese peoples.

PM Sonexay Siphandone invited the Vietnamese Government chief and his spouse to pay an official visit to Laos at an appropriate time, and Le Minh Hung gladly accepted the invitation.

PM Hung, for his part, congratulated Laos on the successful first session of its 10th National Assembly in March and extended congratulations to Sonexay Siphandone on assuming the post of Lao prime minister.

On this occasion, Hung also invited Sonexay Siphandone to make an official visit to Vietnam and attend the ASEAN Future Forum 2026. The invitation was graciously accepted.
