International media see pivotal moment for Vietnam to pursue development goals

VOV.VN - Public attention in Japan has focused on Vietnam after the National Assembly elected Party General Secretary To Lam as State President. Indonesian media, in their assessments of the political development, also said it marks a pivotal moment for Vietnam to pursue its development goals.

Immediately after the election, Japan’s Kyodo News Agency reported on the development, noting that To Lam’s high level of support reflects the substantive results of ongoing reforms aimed at accelerating economic development, along with his prominent diplomatic role.

Kyodo also reported that To Lam expressed determination to improve people’s living standards, sustain growth, and expand contributions to global peace and stability. The information was further carried by NNA Asia, an online publication under Kyodo News covering various aspects of life across Asia, with about 7,500 subscribing entities.

On the same day, the Japanese-language service of Reuters also reported quickly and in detail on the event. It said To Lam emphasized the creation of a new growth model driven by science and technology, reform and digital transformation, while identifying a self-reliant national defense as a priority.

Many other Japanese newspapers, radio stations and television broadcasters, from central to local levels, also covered the event widely, describing it as an important move contributing to Vietnam’s development as one of Japan’s leading partners across multiple fields.

As an economy with a growing role and position within ASEAN, political developments in Vietnam have drawn attention from policymakers, experts and the media in the region. Indonesian reports said the high level of support for Vietnam’s key leadership positions provides an important basis for implementing development goals in the coming period.

An article in Indonesia’s Beritasatu carried the headline that To Lam received unanimous support from the 16th National Assembly to become State President for the 2026-2031 term. The article outlined his background following his election, noting that under his leadership in recent years, Vietnam has carried out strong structural reforms and accelerated  an economic transition based on science, technology, innovation and digitalization.

Vietnam has set targets to become a developing country with modern industry and upper-middle income by 2030, and is expected to become a developed, high-income country by 2045. On foreign relations, To Lam has strengthened international ties through overseas visits, while Vietnam has made contributions at the United Nations.

Indonesian outlet Indowarta said the National Assembly’s unanimous vote to elect To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, as State President marks an important moment in the country’s leadership transition. It said his track record across key positions has provided the basis for the strong confidence shown by National Assembly deputies.

The outlet added that policies in the coming period are expected to continue prioritizing political stability and economic development. It also said that under his leadership, Vietnam could reinforce its position internationally and accelerate domestic reforms already underway.

The article also noted that Vietnamese people and international observers are watching how the country will resolve  current challenges, including economic issues, external relations, and efforts to advance modernization while adapting to increasingly complex geopolitical and economic changes.

In an interview with a VOV correspondent in Indonesia, Vereramalla Anjaiah, a journalist and researcher at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), said that the strong support for Vietnam’s key leadership positions provides an important basis for achieving development goals in the coming period.

He said Vietnam is expected to maintain stable development with its current leadership. The unanimous support signals positive conditions for policy direction, while the consolidation of top leadership roles allows for faster and more effective policy formulation and implementation. He added that as Vietnam and other countries are entering a critical phase in dealing with challenges amid global uncertainty, including developments in oil markets and regional tensions, expectations will be high alongside greater responsibility, he added.
