Ho Chi Minh City reinforces long-standing Vietnam-Cambodia friendship
VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City has consistently valued and actively contributed to strengthening the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the governments and people of Vietnam and Cambodia.
This affirmation was made by Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nam, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association at a gathering held on November 6 in Ho Chi Minh City to mark the 72nd anniversary of Cambodia’s Independence Day (November 9, 1953-November 9, 2025). The event was organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations.
According to Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nam, Vietnam and Cambodia are close neighboring countries that have long maintained a traditional friendship, good cooperation, and solidarity, supporting each other during their national liberation struggles.
At present, leaders and the people of both nations continue to promote solidarity and friendship, cooperate in socio-economic development, and coordinate closely at international forums, while working to elevate their traditional neighborly relations to new heights for the benefit of their people.
He said that in 2025, the Association coordinated a series of activities to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association, including a ceremony marking the 46th anniversary of the victory over the Southwest border war and the joint victory with the Cambodian people over the genocidal regime (January 7, 1979 – January 7, 2025); the Vietnam–Cambodia Business Forum; sponsorship of 32 Cambodian students; Tet (lunar new year festival) celebrations and cultural-historical exchange activities for Cambodian students and the Cambodian community in the city; and collaboration with the Tam Viet volunteer medical team to provide medical examinations and gifts to nearly 2,000 disadvantaged residents in Cambodia.
He emphasized that, together with people nationwide, Ho Chi Minh City will continue contributing to realizing the cooperative orientation affirmed by the two countries’ leaders “Good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive and sustainable cooperation” thereby contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
Expressing his appreciation for the gathering, Chan Sorykan, Consul General of Cambodia in Ho Chi Minh City, highlighted the historical significance of November 9, 1953, in Cambodia’s national development and recalled the hardships the country had endured. He expressed deep gratitude for the sincere, timely, and selfless support provided by Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in helping the Cambodian people escape the genocidal regime.
According to the Consul General, Cambodia and Vietnam have made progress in bilateral relations across multiple areas such as trade, diplomacy, politics, society, and people-to-people exchange, in line with the spirit of in the spirit of good neighborliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive, sustainable cooperation.
In 2024, bilateral trade exceeded US$12 billion, making Vietnam Cambodia’s third-largest trading partner and its largest partner among ASEAN member states.
He affirmed that the Consulate General of Cambodia in Ho Chi Minh City will continue contributing to promoting traditional friendship and supporting enhanced economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries in 2025 and beyond, particularly in promoting business connectivity and stepping up efforts to achieve the bilateral trade target of US$20 billion in the near future.
