General Phan Van Giang hosts Chief of Defence Forces of Thailand in Hanoi

VOV.VN - General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, and Minister of National Defence, hosted a reception in Hanoi on July 5 for Chief of Defence Forces of Thailand Gen. Songwit Noonpackdee during his official visit to Vietnam.

During the meeting, General Phan Van Giang emphasized that the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in May 2025 marked a historic milestone, opening a new chapter in Vietnam–Thailand ties. He affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to continuously strengthening its friendly and substantive cooperation with Thailand.

Minister Phan Van Giang also commended the outcomes of the talks held one day earlier between General Songwit Noonpackdee and General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Member of the Central Military Commission, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, and Deputy Minister of National Defence.

He acknowledged the positive progress in Vietnam–Thailand defence cooperation in recent years, as well as Thailand’s active role, both at the national level and specifically through its Ministry of Defence and Royal Thai Armed Forces in promoting multilateral cooperation, particularly within the ASEAN framework.

General Phan Van Giang affirmed that the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam supports closer and more effective cooperation between the two sides, which will contributing to the development of each country’s national defence and to the Vietnam–Thailand comprehensive strategic partnership.

He proposed that the two militaries actively carry out activities to deepen mutual understanding and trust, focusing on strategic consultations, high-level exchanges, and delegation visits. He also called for continued improvements in cooperation across military services and arms, and the promotion of potential areas in line with each side’s strengths and needs.

In response, General Songwit Noonpackdee spoke highly of the sound defence cooperation between the two countries in recent years, affirming that defence ties constitute a key pillar of the Thailand–Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership.

He also expressed his admiration for Vietnam’s development achievements and voiced confidence that the historic reform of the two-tier local government model currently underway will help Vietnam attain even greater progress in the time ahead.
