Foreign Ministry holds press conference on different issues

VOV.VN - Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang on September 21 answered reporters' queries on the situation of Vietnamese people after the earthquake in Mexico at a press briefing in Hanoi.

“According to the Vietnam Embassy in Mexico, no Vietnamese citizen has been reportedly injured in the earthquake. The Embassy has promptly assisted Vietnamese people with temporary accommodation. It is seeking ways to ensure communication and take necessary citizen protection measures to ensure safety for Vietnamese people living and working in Mexico. The Embassy has set up a hotline on citizen protection to ensure prompt assistance," Hang said.

Concerning the UN’s recent increased sanctions on the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK), Hang said as a responsible member of the UN and international community, Vietnam always abides by UN Security Council resolutions including the resolution on the DPRK.

At the conference, the official updated the situation of Vietnamese citizen Nguyen Quoc Phi who recently died in Taiwan (China).

Hang said the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department held a working session with the Vietnamese Economic – Cultural Office in Taipei on September 8 and asked the Taiwanese side to soon investigate and make clear the case, adding that the office issued urgent visa to family of the victim to handle funeral observances. 

The office worked hand in hand with the Taiwanese authorities and requested that the case must be seriously dealt with. It is also keeping a close watch on the case and ready to provide necessary citizen protection measures, including legitimate rights and interests of the Vietnamese national, she said.

When responding to the settlement of recent wrongdoings and corruption cases, Hang affirmed the high determination of the Party, State and government of Vietnam to combat wrongdoings and deal with corruption cases.

Duly punishments will be given to law violators in line with the country’s law, she said, adding that the standpoint has repeatedly been reiterated by Vietnamese leaders and published by media agencies.

In reply to a reporter's question regarding confirmation about the possibility that US President Donald Trump will visit Vietnam, the official said "At the meeting between Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and US President Donald Trump in May, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he would visit Vietnam and attend the APEC 2017 Summit. The two sides are actively arrange for the visit. "

Also at the press briefing, the spokesperson also announced Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán Viktor's upcoming official visit to Vietnam from September 24-26 at the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

During the visit, PM Orban Viktor will pay a courtesy call to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and State President Tran Dai Quang, hold talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and meet Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. He will attend the Vietnam-Hungary Business Forum, Hang said.

The two sides will examine ways to bolster their cooperation in economics, trade, investment, science-technology, education- training, healthcare, environment, security, and defence, during the upcoming visit by Hungary’s government leader.

The leaders will discuss measures to advance bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international issues of shared concern, she added.
