Embassy marks 45 years of Vietnam-Colombia diplomatic ties

VOV.VN - The 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the nation and Colombia was recently celebrated by the Vietnamese Embassy in Venezuela and Colombia alongside the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bogota.

As part of his address, Colombian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jorge Rojas Rodrigez, on behalf of the local government, extended heartfelt condolences to the Vietnamese Government and people over the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong.

He used the occasion to hail the late Party chief for his remarkable contributions to Vietnamese socio-economic progress, with attendees and guests observing a moment of silence in commemoration of the deceased Vietnamese leader.

Ambassador Vu Trung My stated that after more than four decades, the nation’s diplomatic ties with Colombia has been increasingly enhanced and has become more substantive across a variety of fields, particularly in terms of economic and trade co-operation. Last year’s bilateral trade reached US$790 million, doubling that of 2018 and making Colombia the country’s fifth largest trade partner in Latin America.

The Colombian official shared his delight at the positive developments recorded in bilateral relations over recent years, particularly as both sides have collaborated and offered mutual support within international organisations, multilateral forums, and inter-regional co-operation mechanisms such as the UN and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC). This is along with joint work between ASEAN and the Pacific Alliance.

Admiring the country’s historical struggle for the cause of national liberation and reunification, as well as the numerous achievements recorded in its ongoing reform process led by the CPV, Deputy Minister Rodrigez underlined the need for both countries to continue expanding collaboration efforts across all sectors to match their strong political relationship.

Prior to the ceremony, the Embassy and the Colombian Diplomatic Academy co-hosted a seminar on bilateral ties and a photo exhibition showcasing the beauty of the Vietnamese nation, culture, and people.
