DPRK-USA Summit to pave way for trust building

The second DPRK-USA Summit is a chance to build trust between the two countries and create favourable conditions for negotiations on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, commented Dr. Le Hong Hiep, an expert at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.

Dr. Hiep said that the current international situation and the improved relationship between the US and the DPRK may pose certain impacts on the overall situation of their negotiations and its outcomes after their first meeting in June 2018 in Singapore.

However, he held that one year is not enough to deal with all problems, thus a third or fourth or many other rounds of negotiations may take place in the future.

But it can be optimistic that during the second meeting, the DPRK-US relations may reach certain progress such as putting forth a clearer definition of the denuclearization progress of the DPRK, thus paving the way for next steps.

Hiep asserted that the negotiations between the two countries may come to a final and practical solution. If the two sides wish to show their goodwill amidst no progress is reached in the denuclearization, they may issue an official announcement on the end of the Korean war, thus opening the way for the building of trust between them as well as facilitating negotiations on the denulearisation on the Korean Peninsula.

Regarding the role of Vietnam as the host of the second summit, Dr. Hiep said that the fact that Vietnam has been chosen as the venue of the summit showed that both US and DPRK have trust in Vietnam and hope that their selection will contribute to promoting the reconciliation process as well as the opening and reform process of the DPRK.

The expert expressed his belief that if Vietnam successfully hosts the event, its role and prestige in the global arena will be enhanced. Meanwhile, the Vietnam-US relationship as well as the Vietnam-DPRK ties will have a new foundation for stronger development in the future, he added.
