Vietnamese expatriates in USA look to Party Congress for unity, renewed momentum

VOV.VN - Vietnamese expatriates in the United States are closely watching the upcoming 14th National Party Congress, hoping it will deliver new breakthroughs to strengthen national unity and mobilise overseas Vietnamese to contribute more actively to the country’s next development phase.

Vietnamese ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung, one of the overseas delegates to attend the congress, was speaking during an interview granted to the media, saying the Vietnamese community in the US shares a strong aspiration for Vietnam to enter a new era of national advancement.

He highlighted the growing role of Vietnam’s foreign policy over the 2020–2025 term, a period marked by global turbulence including the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflict, climate-related disasters and intensifying strategic competition among major powers.

Despite these challenges, Vietnam has managed to maintain stability, strengthen its international standing and improve living standards at home, outcomes to which foreign affairs have made a significant contribution, he said.

According to the diplomat, Vietnam’s diplomacy over the past five years has been implemented across three pillars – Party diplomacy, state diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges – with several key achievements. These include preserving a peaceful and stable external environment, expanding partnerships without creating adversaries, deepening international integration to attract external resources for development, and enhancing Vietnam’s image as a confident and responsible contributor to global affairs.

He pointed to Vietnam’s rapid expansion of diplomatic ties, including the upgrading of relations with several major powers, as evidence of the country’s rising credibility and influence. Most notably, Vietnam and the United States elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a historic step in bilateral ties.

He said such upgrades reflect mutual recognition rather than unilateral intent, underscoring Vietnam’s growing importance to its partners. The evolution of Vietnam–US relations – from former foes to comprehensive strategic partners – has become a widely cited example of reconciliation in international relations.

Today, Vietnam is a key investment and business destination for major US corporations, ranks among the top trading partners of the United States globally, and leads Southeast Asia in the number of students studying in the US, highlighting the depth and breadth of bilateral engagement.

In the time ahead, the ambassador said expectations for the 14th Party Congress are high, particularly in terms of strategic decisions that could help realise Vietnam’s long-term goal of becoming a prosperous, high-income country by 2045.

He stressed that human capital should remain central to future policy choices, noting that Vietnamese people are its most decisive resource. He also expressed hope that the congress would advance institutional reforms to create a more modern and enabling environment for development, alongside a foreign policy that safeguards national interests while contributing to peace, stability and cooperation globally.

For the Vietnamese community in the United States, he said, the congress represents more than a political milestone. It is seen as a catalyst for renewed national cohesion.

Whether they are Vietnamese citizens or of Vietnamese origin, wherever they live, there is a shared aspiration for a strong, independent and prosperous Vietnam, he said, adding that past achievements have reinforced confidence in the country’s development path.

He voiced overseas Vietnamese’s hope that the 14th Party Congress would introduce fresh breakthroughs to further promote great national unity, enabling all Vietnamese to work together in a new era of national development.
