Vietnam finalises key Party leadership positions for new term
VOV.VN - The 14th Party Central Committee comprising 200 members on January 23 convened its first plenary plenum, completing key leadership appointments that mark the start of a new five-year term (2026-2031).
At the meeting held at the Party Central Committee headquarters in Hanoi, the Party Central Committee elected the Politburo, the General Secretary, the Secretariat, the Central Inspection Commission, and the chair of the commission.
The Party Central Committee unanimously re-elected To Lam, who served as General Secretary in the 13th term, to continue as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the 14th term.
The 14th-term Politburo comprises 19 members, including 10 incumbents from the previous term who were re-elected. These include General Secretary To Lam; National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man; Permanent Secretariat member Tran Cam Tu; Vietnam Fatherland Front President Bui Thi Minh Hoai; Head of the Party’s Organisation Commission Le Minh Hung; Defence Minister Phan Van Giang; Public Security Minister Luong Tam Quang; Hanoi Party Secretary Nguyen Duy Ngoc; Head of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People’s Army Nguyen Trong Nghia; and Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Do Van Chien.
Nine officials joined the Politburo for the first time, including Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang; Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung; Deputy Head of the Party’s Internal Affairs Commission Le Minh Tri; Head of the Party’s Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation Trinh Van Quyet; Head of the Party’s Policy and Strategy Commission Nguyen Thanh Nghi; Inspection Commission Chairman Tran Sy Thanh; Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang; Standing Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics Doan Minh Huan; and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Office Pham Gia Tuc.
Under the Party’s Charter, the Politburo is responsible for leading and overseeing the implementation of resolutions adopted by the National Party Congress and the Party Central Committee, deciding on major policy orientations, organisational and personnel matters, and preparing agendas for Central Committee meetings.
Meanwhile, the 14th-term Secretariat consists of 13 members, including 10 Politburo members assigned by the Politburo to serve concurrently. Three additional Secretariat members were elected at the meeting: Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra, and Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court Nguyen Van Quang.
Tran Cam Tu was assigned to continue serving as Permanent Member of the Secretariat for the new term.
The Secretariat is tasked with overseeing the Party’s day-to-day operations, including Party building, mass mobilisation, inspection and supervision of Party resolutions and directives across economic, social, defence, security and foreign affairs domains, as well as coordination among organisations within the political system.
The 14th-term Central Inspection Commission comprises 23 members, with Tran Sy Thanh re-elected as chairman. The commission is responsible for supervising Party discipline and enforcement nationwide.
