Tougher rules are needed to combat corruption and related offences: Party leader

VOV.VN - Tougher rules will be put in place to combat corruption, wastefulness and related offences, said Party General Secretary To Lam while chairing the 27th meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Prevention and Control of Corruption, Wastefulness and Negative Phenomena in Hanoi.

The fight against corruption, wastefulness, and negativity must continue to be implemented strongly, decisively, and effectively in 2025 to ensure the successful organization of Party congresses at all levels and to address the country’s critical and urgent tasks, he said at the meeting on December 31.

As 2025 is the final year of the current term, To Lam noted, it is necessary to continue researching and evaluating the comprehensive work of combating corruption, wastefulness, and negativity from the beginning of the Party term until now, and to include this issue in the draft document for the 14th National Party Congress.

“We must envision how the fight against corruption, wastefulness, and negativity will contribute to national development in the new era,” said the General Secretary, adding that “We must not only combat corruption but also promote economic growth with double-digit GDP growth for several years, ensuring that one task does not hinder the other.”

The Party leader also requested addressing shortcomings and removing bottlenecks in the institutional and legal frameworks, creating momentum for innovation, creativity, economic-social development, as well as the fight against corruption, wastefulness, and negativity. Priorities will be given to urgently completing the legal framework for combating waste, reorganizing and streamlining political system agencies, revising and improving the mechanisms, policies, and laws that have been identified as flawed through reviews, and effectively implementing the National Strategy for Waste Prevention and Combat.

“We need to take decisive and comprehensive actions to create a strong breakthrough in the fight against wastefulness throughout society……. Those responsible must be held accountable, ranging from Party discipline to administrative sanctions and even criminal prosecution,” directed the General Secretary.

At the meeting, the Steering Committee also agreed to strengthen inspection, supervision, auditing, and investigation, with a focus on thoroughly handling serious, complex corruption, waste, and negativity cases that have attracted public attention. Special attention will be given to cases involving personnel related to Party congresses at all levels, with the goal of concluding investigations and resolutions for 26 cases in 2025.

It was reported in 2024 Party committees and Party inspection commissions at all levels disciplined 709 Party organizations and 24,097 Party members for violations. The Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Central Inspection Commission disciplined 68 senior officials under the management of the Party Central Party.

Notably, for the first time, the Politburo disciplined two former key Party and State leaders for violating regulations in performing their responsibilities, duties, and in combating corruption and related offences.
