Power sector urged to accelerate development to support double-digit economic growth
VOV.VN - The power sector must ensure safe and stable electricity supply to meet the increasing demands of people and businesses, while supporting the country’s goal of double-digit economic growth, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 4th Party Congress of the Electricity of Vientam Group (EVN) for 2025-2030 in Hanoi on August 10.

The Prime Minister praised the power sector’s glorious 70-year tradition, highlighting its resilience in overcoming challenges, advancing governance, and improving efficiency—earning the government’s trust and high expectations for its new development phase.
Acknowledging existing shortcomings, particularly the absence of a fair and competitive electricity market, he urged the sector to break through current barriers and accelerate development with greater boldness and determination. Special emphasis was placed on expanding power sources, especially clean energy and nuclear power, which have been embraced globally as sustainable solutions.
“The global trend is nuclear power, with over 400 plants worldwide, and many countries, such as France, relying on more than 50% nuclear energy. The key lies in safety control and the development of nuclear power as a clean energy source. The Vietnamese people become stronger and smarter under pressure and difficulties. We must accelerate, break through, speed up, and be bolder in developing power sources and grids,” the Prime Minister stressed.
He called on the power sector to take proactive measures in securing fuel supplies for power generation—especially coal extraction—and to strive to position EVN among the top three, or even higher, in ASEAN.
Regarding Party building, the Prime Minister directed continued implementation of five leadership methods, with special attention to inspection and supervision, alongside combating wastefulness, corruption, and monopolies in power production, distribution, and use.
Moreover, EVN must strictly follow the Party’s guidelines and state laws, adapting flexibly to evolving situations. The sector should mobilize resources through public-private partnerships, institutional reforms, and active engagement of the people. The State will take the lead and activate all available resources to develop the power sector, he assured.
During the 2021-2025 term, EVN invested over VND513 trillion, completing the government-assigned plan. Notably, the 500kV Quang Trach – Pho Noi transmission line project was completed in just over six months, serving as a model of political mobilization and nationwide solidarity.
Electricity commercial output in 2025 is expected to reach 289 billion kWh, marking a 5.25% increase from the previous year. Over the entire 2021-2025 period, average annual electricity growth reached 5.9%.
Key tasks identified for the new term include ensuring national energy security, accelerating investment in power sources and grid construction according to the approved plan, developing modern, safe, and secure transmission and distribution grids, and applying digital technology and innovation in corporate governance.
EVN aims to become a digital enterprise operating smartly on advanced digital platforms and ecosystems by 2030.
