Prime Minister orders electricity supply assurance during 2025 summer peak
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued a directive on June 3, urging relevant ministries, local authorities, and energy corporations to implement coordinated and decisive measures to ensure sufficient electricity supply during the 2025 summer peak and beyond.
The directive emphasises that electricity supply is a key factor in achieving the economic growth target of 8% in 2025 and double-digit growth from 2026 to 2030. While power supply is currently stable, extreme heat in the North and Central regions is putting significant pressure on the grid, with peak capacity on June 2 reaching a record 51,672 MW.
Due to the impact of climate change, weather conditions are becoming more complicated and unpredictable, thereby negatively affecting the assurance of electricity supply, especially in the north, says the directive.
It requests that relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, along with Vietnam Electricity (EVN), implement synchronous solutions to ensure the national power system operates safely with a sufficient electricity supply to serve production and businesses’ operations and people's lives in the peak months of 2025 and beyond.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is tasked with overall responsibility for ensuring electricity supply. It must urgently implement the adjusted Power Development Plan VIII, and monitor project progress closely, ensuring system operation aligns with weather conditions.
Hydropower, thermal, wind, and solar power plants must prepare resources, conduct maintenance, and operate at maximum capacity. Key projects, including Nhon Trach 3 & 4, Quang Trach 1, Hoa Binh expansion, and 500kV transmission lines, must meet their deadlines between June and September 2025.
Energy corporations such as Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), Vietnam National Industry - Energy Group (PVN), Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV), and localities must secure sufficient coal and gas supply; resolve bottlenecks; accelerate investment; negotiate power purchases in line with market mechanisms; and promote effective electricity-saving measures.
The Prime Minister has assigned Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son to direct, inspect, and handle arising issues, while the Government Office needs to regularly monitor relevant ministries and agencies to carry out the tasks assigned by the Prime Minister in this official dispatch.
