PM says security is key to sustainable Mekong Delta development
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has said ensuring security and public order is a prerequisite for rapid and sustainable development in the Mekong Delta, a region of strategic importance to the country’s economy and national security.
Speaking at a conference in Hanoi on December 29 focused on security and public order in support of socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta, the PM affirmed that the region plays a critical role in political, economic, defence, environmental and foreign affairs, describing it as Vietnam’s southern gateway.
The Mekong Delta is closely linked to the task of building and safeguarding national sovereignty, he said.
The Prime Minister noted that the Party and the State have paid sustained attention to the region through major policy frameworks, including Politburo Resolution No. 13 and Government Resolution No. 78, which aim to promote socio-economic development alongside national defence and security through 2030, with a longer-term vision to 2045.
While acknowledging progress, he pointed to ongoing challenges, including difficulties faced by parts of the Khmer ethnic minority, uneven performance of local political systems, particularly at the grassroots level, and at times insufficient coordination in maintaining security and public order.
To address the issues, the Prime Minister called on relevant ministries and localities to treat security and public order as a long-term political task under the absolute and comprehensive leadership of the Communist Party and the unified management of the State. He stressed that local leaders must take primary responsibility for implementation.
The Government leader urged regional localities to closely integrate socio-economic development with defence and security efforts, focusing on early prevention and grassroots-level action under the “four-on-the-spot” approach, which emphasises local leadership, resources, forces and logistics.
He also highlighted the need to improve the effectiveness of ethnic and religious policies, expand employment opportunities and raise living standards to prevent social tensions and reduce vulnerabilities that hostile forces could exploit.
Looking ahead to 2026, the PM said the designated ministries and local administrations have been tasked with completing seven key priority areas covering economic growth, culture, education and healthcare in the Mekong Delta. He called for timely reporting to remove bottlenecks, mobilise resources and lay the groundwork for long-term sustainable development in the region.
In his speech, Minister of Public Security Luong Tam Quang said that Party directives and State policies aimed at ensuring security and public order in the Mekong Delta have been implemented effectively, creating a stable environment for socio-economic development in the region.
Quang said localities have stepped up efforts to prevent and counter activities by hostile and reactionary forces, as well as various forms of crime that threaten public order in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.
These measures have helped maintain security and safety, providing favourable conditions for economic growth and improving living standards for local residents, he said.
Conference participants agreed that in recent years, the Party and State leadership have consistently prioritised maintaining public order as a foundation for socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta, a key agricultural and strategic region in southern Vietnam.
Many resolutions, conclusions and policy programmes have been issued to promote economic development while safeguarding security and stability in the region. Effective implementation of these policies has led to visible improvements in socio-economic conditions, contributing to the maintenance of public order, delegates said.
They shared a common commitment to aligning thinking, awareness and action in order to fulfil future objectives, tasks and solutions for socio-economic development and security assurance in the Mekong Delta and neighbouring areas.
