Party leader requests immediate relief aid to Yagi struck communities
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and President To Lam has asked for more efforts to be made to address the aftermath of typhoon Yagi and subsequent floods and landslides, with relief aid to be immediately delivered to vulnerable communities.
Overcoming the consequences of Typhoon Yagi is an urgent and critical task of the entire political system this week, said To Lam, while chairing a Politburo meeting in Hanoi on September 9.
The party leader, on behalf of the Politburo and the Secretariat, expressed sympathy to agencies, localities, families, and individuals affected by the typhoon. He also commended the Government, the Prime Minister, the military and police forces, relevant ministries, and particularly the media, for their proactive and decisive leadership and mobilization of resources to respond early and effectively to Yagi.
For immediate solutions, he directed all sectors to remain highly focused on implementing response measures, including deploying rescue and emergency teams to assist those who are isolated, in distress, or missing. He emphasized the use of the most advanced equipment to reach areas currently cut off and inaccessible due to flooding.
In an unprecedented emergency situation like this, assistance is of utmost importance, especially in hardest hit localities such as Lao Cai, Son La, Yen Bai, Cao Bang, and other mountainous provinces, as well as among the elderly, children, women, and people with disability, said the top leader.
He also directed ministries, sectors, and localities to continue inspecting coastal dikes, bridges, and irrigation works at high risk to ensure timely interventions.
It is crucial to urgently implement measures to address transportation and communication disruptions in isolated areas, enhance transportation means including both maritime and air transport, and even consider using military helicopters for rescue operations, said To Lam.
He reminded them to strengthen public security and order measures while mobilizing nationwide support and engagement in the recovery from the impacts of Typhoon Yagi.
Typhoon Yagi slammed into northern Vietnam on September 7, leaving 46 dead and 22 injured (September 9 update).
Though weakening Yagi has moved into Laos and dissipated, heavy rain is continuing to fall, threatening mountainous localities.
Meteorologists have warned the localities about a high risk of flash floods and landslides in the coming days.
