VOV.VN - The National Election Council held its first meeting in Hanoi on July 9 to discuss preparations for the election of deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term, slated for March 15, 2026.

At the meeting, the Council discussed and gave opinions on several important draft documents, including the proposal from the National Assembly Standing Committee on issuing resolutions and working regulations, and the proposed schedule of the Council’s meetings; as well as the assignment of tasks to relevant agencies for drafting documents to support the election process.

In his speech at the meeting, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, who also chairs the National Election Council, noted that the matters discussed at the meeting are of critical importance, as they lay the foundation for the Council’s operational framework, clearly delineate the responsibilities of each member, and ensure seamless, coordinated, and effective collaboration throughout the entire election process.

He called on all Council members to uphold a spirit of responsibility, democracy, and intelligence, to actively study, discuss, and contribute practical opinions to the meeting agenda so that consensus can be reached, forming the basis for effectively carrying out the next phases of the election preparation.

At its recent ninth session in Hanoi, the National Assembly approved a resolution on the establishment of the National Election Council to prepare for the election of deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term. The council is led by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man.

Vietnam has set Sunday, March 15, 2026, as the election day for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term. This date is three months earlier than initially expected that reflects practical requirements following the restructuring of the administrative apparatus and the implementation of a two-tier government model in the country.
