National Assembly passes Law on ID Card at year-end session
VOV.VN - The National Assembly of Vietnam on November 27 approved the Law on ID Card, with 431 votes in favour out of 468 deputies present at the ongoing year-end session in Hanoi.
According to Le Tan Toi, chairman of the National Assembly’s Defense and Security, the new name of the law clearly demonstrates its scientific nature, as it covers the scope of regulation and the subjects of application of the law, keeping up with the digital society management trend.
Changing the name of the 2014 law will support the Government’s digital transformation, digital economy, and digital society development, and at the same time, support people in engaging in social activities and using administrative procedures, public services and civil transactions.
The chip-based ID cards are made with advanced technology, have high security capabilities, and ensure against card counterfeiting.
Currently, the nine-digit ID card, 12-digit ID card, barcode ID card and chip-based ID card are in circulation in Vietnam.
All the ID cards issued before the effective date of the newly approved ID Card law are still valid until the expiration date printed on the card.
For nine-digit and 12-digit ID cards that are still valid, the newly approved ID Card law clearly stipulates that they can be used until December 31, 2024.
All the nine-digit and 12-digit ID cards that expire from January 15, 2024 to June 30, 2024 will continue to be valid until June 30, 2024.
The Law on ID Card will replace the 2014 Law on Citizen ID Card and will come into force on July 1, 2024.
On the same day, the National Assembly is scheduled to pass the amended housing law and the amended law water resources.
