National Assembly holds memorial, raises funds for flood victims
VOV.VN - The National Assembly on November 24 held a memorial for residents who lost their lives in recent storms and floods and launched a fundraising campaign to support affected communities in overcoming their hardships.
In his opening speech, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Do Van Chien reported that recent historic downpours and subsequent floods and storms have caused severe damage in the central region, especially in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, and other provinces.
Despite intensive efforts by the Party, State, and armed forces to prevent and mitigate natural disasters, heavy rains, strong winds, and rapidly rising floodwaters have led to significant losses.
Preliminary statistics show 91 fatalities, 11 missing persons, tens of thousands of homes flooded or damaged, hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops destroyed, and millions of livestock swept away by the floods.
On behalf of the Party, State, Vietnam Fatherland Front and National Assembly, the Vice Chairman expressed deep condolences to families of the victims and emphasised that the spirit of solidarity and mutual care remains a cherished cultural value of the Vietnamese people.
The National Assembly acknowledged and praised the army, police, and local forces for their tireless efforts and bravery in rescue operations, he said.
The Standing Committee of the National Assembly called on all deputies, officials, civil servants, and staff members to donate at least one day’s salary to assist flood victims.
Following the appeal, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, Vice Chairpersons, and deputies contributed to the relief fund.
Earlier on November 23, the Presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee launched an appeal in response to severe losses of lives and property caused by the recent exceptional floods in the central region.
