Former leaders expected to further contribute to Vietnam’s prosperous future

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam expressed his profound gratitude for former leaders’ great contributions to Vietnam’s development and expected that they would continue to bring into play their wisdom and experience, accompanying the Party, State, and people in building a prosperous and happy nation in the new era.

The Party leader was speaking at a meeting with veteran revolutionaries, former members of the Party Central Committee, and former leaders of Party agencies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and socio-political organisations, in Hanoi on August 18, marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945 – 2025) and National Day (September 2, 1945 – 2025).

He stressed that the 80-year journey has been marked by immense sacrifice and hardship, yet illuminated by great victories and achievements. Each leader has their own story and their own path of dedication, but what unites them all is their unwavering commitment to the ideal of national independence linked with socialism, their devotion to the people, and their willingness to place the interests of the Party and the nation above their own.

The top leader briefed the participants on the country’s current situation, and affirmed that Vietnam is entering a new era with the aspiration of fast and sustainable development, aiming to become a developed, high-income economy by the mid-21st century. To further advance national renewal, in addition to the efforts of the entire political system and the people, the Party and State greatly need the companionship and insights of the former leaders, those who have overcome many challenges, deeply understand the laws of development, and remain steadfast in the goal of serving the nation and the people.

The General Secretary also outlined key achievements and set forth major directions for the coming period, including safeguarding peace, stability, and social order; pursuing rapid and sustainable economic growth; raising living standards; striving to meet socio-economic development goals at the highest possible level, with a GDP growth target of 8% or more in 2025. Other orientations are making strong investments in strategic transport infrastructure; fostering the growth of the private sector; and advancing social policies such as sustainable poverty reduction, eradicating substandard housing, offering free tuition for all general education students starting in the 2025 academic year, building schools in border areas, and improving health care and social welfare.

Particularly, the General Secretary underscored preparations for the coming 14th National Party Congress, describing it as a historic congress that will mark a turning point, leading the nation into a new era of prosperity and sustainable development. A notable innovation is the integration of different reports into a single comprehensive “Political Report”, alongside the introduction of a “Programme of Action” for the entire term.

Personnel work is being carefully prepared, with the requirement to select truly exemplary candidates who dare to think, dare to act, put the interests of the nation and the people above all else, and win the trust of both the Party and the people.

The General Secretary affirmed that although retired, former leaders remain a valuable resource, with the revolutionary flame still burning strongly in their hearts. He expected that they would continue to contribute their intellect, prestige, and inspiration to younger generations, helping the Party and State overcome difficulties and realise the aspiration of building a prosperous and happy Vietnam.

On this occasion, Party General Secretary To Lam presented Party badges marking 80, 75, 60, 55, 45, and 40 years of membership to veteran revolutionaries and former leaders of Party bodies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and socio-political organisations. Leaders of the Party and State also presented the new Party membership cards to several former Party and Fatherland Front leaders.
