Early elections held on 20 islands in Truong Sa special administrative zone

VOV.VN - Early elections for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term were held on 20 out of the 21 islands in the Truong Sa (Spratly) special administrative zone of Khanh Hoa province on March 8.

Truong Sa Island itself will organise voting on March 15 together with the rest of the country.

From early morning, polling stations across the islands were decorated with national flags, flowers, banners and slogans welcoming election day. Polling rooms were solemnly arranged with the national flag, a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh and ballot boxes placed in central positions. Lists of voters and brief biographies of candidates were publicly displayed to allow voters to review information and exercise their civic rights and responsibilities.

At the central courtyards of the islands, at exactly 7 a.m., officials, soldiers and residents held a solemn flag-raising ceremony to mark the beginning of election day.

Following the ceremony, representatives of the election committees announced the opening of the voting process, introduced delegates and reviewed polling regulations before guiding voters through the voting procedures in accordance with regulations.

Amid the festive atmosphere of a national festival, many families on islands such as Song Tu Tay, Sinh Ton and Da Tay arrived early at polling stations to cast their ballots.

Le Thi Hoang Yen, a resident of Da Tay Island, arrived at the polling station with her young child, wearing a Áo dài (traditional attire). She said that taking part in the election on the sacred seas and islands of the homeland was a great honour for local residents.

“We are always aware of our rights and responsibilities to choose the most deserving representatives who can reflect the aspirations and interests of the people,” Yen said.

According to the voting procedures, voters presented their voter cards to receive ballots for National Assembly deputies and People’s Council representatives at different levels. They then entered private booths to mark their ballots before personally placing them into the ballot boxes under the supervision of election officials and other voters. All activities were carried out in a solemn, democratic and orderly manner in accordance with the law.

Among the voters was Sergeant Nguyen Minh Chien, a young soldier stationed on An Bang Island. Wearing his military uniform and holding his voter card, he expressed pride in exercising his civic right on a frontline island of the country.

“I carefully studied the list of candidates to choose those who are truly worthy and capable of contributing to the country’s development,” Sergeant Chien said.

Thanks to thorough preparations, election day on the islands took place in a serious, democratic and orderly manner, ensuring safety and compliance with legal regulations. Officials, soldiers and residents on the islands demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility in fulfilling their civic rights and duties, contributing to the overall success of the elections for the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term.
