Belgium Friendship Association supports Vietnam’s East Sea stance

VOV.VN - The Belgium-Vietnam Friendship Association has recently voiced its strong support for Vietnam’s position on its inalienable sovereignty in the East Sea internationally known as the South China Sea.

President of the Belgium-Vietnam Friendship Association Pierre Grega said his association is aware of recent escalating tensions in the East Sea and firmly supports all Vietnamese associations regarding their stance towards the East Sea issue.

Grega noted that China’s unilateral claim for sovereignty over most of the East Sea area is completely contrary to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Hanoi last week requested Beijing to end its infringement on Vietnam’s sovereignty after the latter deployed hundreds of ships to the Whitsun Reef on Vietnam’s Spratly (Truong Sa) archipelago.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence to reassert its sovereignty over the Spratly archipelago in accordance with international law.

Hang stressed China’s move violated Vietnam’s sovereignty and the 1982 UNCLOS, ran counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), complicated the situation and undermined negotiations of the Code of Conduct (COC) between ASEAN and China.
