Vietnamese Prime Minister meets world leaders G20 Summit sidelines

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held high-level meetings with leaders from several countries to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, in Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 22, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

PM Chinh met with President Lee Jae-myung of the Republic of Korea, who affirmed that the RoK considers Vietnam a key partner in its regional foreign policy and is ready to accompany Vietnam on its future development path. President Lee extended his condolences and deep sympathy to the Vietnamese people over the human and material losses caused by recent storms and floods.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction at the continued progress in Vietnam–RoK relations, particularly following the upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They highlighted the positive and effective implementation of recent high-level agreements.

The two sides agreed to further strengthen political trust through high-level exchanges; expand practical cooperation in defence and security; boost economic, trade, and investment ties; and make science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation a new pillar of bilateral cooperation. Cooperation in labour, culture, tourism, and local exchanges will also be intensified.

President Lee affirmed that the RoK is actively promoting labour cooperation programmes to further enhance bilateral collaboration in this field.

Both sides also agreed to coordinate more closely on regional and international issues of mutual interest, with the RoK ready to share experience with Vietnam in organising the successful APEC Year 2027.

Meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both sides held that there remains significant potential to deepen practical and effective bilateral cooperation.

They agreed to create breakthroughs in economic, trade, and investment cooperation; expand defence and security collaboration; and elevate science and technology to a key area of partnership.

Prime Minister Chinh proposed enhancing high-level exchanges, opening markets for each other’s goods, exploring a bilateral trade agreement, and encouraging major Indian corporations to invest in high-quality projects in Vietnam, particularly in infrastructure, green energy, and logistics.

He also suggested establishing joint research groups in science and technology areas where India has strengths.

Prime Minister Modi supported these proposals, agreed to promote high-level visits, and open markets for each other’s goods amid complex global trade conditions.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with UAE Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed Al Nahyan, underscoring the need to actively coordinate the UAE–Vietnam Investment Conference in Vietnam, scheduled for April 2026, and to expand cooperation in trade, investment, defense, food security, and the Halal industry.

He also proposed that the UAE increase investment and support Vietnam in establishing an international financial centre in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, and accelerate the launch of FTA negotiations between Vietnam and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The Crown Prince affirmed that the UAE values comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, one of its important trade and investment partners in Southeast Asia. He welcomed Vietnam’s proposals to strengthen economic, trade, investment, financial, scientific, technological, defence, and tourism cooperation under the framework of the Comprehensive Partnership and the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), and noted that UAE delegations would soon visit Vietnam to promote specific projects.

He also highlighted untapped potential in sports cooperation, particularly in supporting youth football development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, urging both sides to effectively implement the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to raise bilateral trade above US$8 billion and establish new cooperation mechanisms in infrastructure, high-speed rail, science, technology, innovation, agriculture, and human resource development.

He also proposed signing a visa exemption agreement for ordinary and official passport holders and requested Spain’s continued support in urging EU countries to ratify the EU – Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and for the European Commission to lift the IUU “yellow card” on Vietnamese fisheries.

Prime Minister Sanchez stressed the need to strengthen trade and investment in high-potential sectors to enhance mutual interests amid global volatility. He also stressed the need to promote tourism, cultural, artistic, and sports exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and friendship, while reaffirming Spain’s commitment to comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam and between the EU and ASEAN.
