Vietnamese PM arrives in Kuala Lumpur for 47th ASEAN Summit

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh arrived in Kuala Lumpur early on October 26 (local time) to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the ASEAN Chair for 2025.

He was welcomed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Malaysian Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek, Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Dato' Tan Yang Thai, and senior officials of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Dinh Ngoc Linh and representatives of the Vietnamese community were also present.

During his three-day stay, Prime Minister Chinh is scheduled to attend and deliver remarks at the ASEAN Summit’s plenary sessions; the ASEAN Awards ceremony; and the signing of the Declaration on Timor-Leste’s admission to ASEAN.

He will also participate in ASEAN summits with key partners, including the United States, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Nations.

The Vietnamese leader will co-chair the 13th Mekong–Japan Summit and join other high-level events, such as the 3rd Asia Zero Emission Community Leaders Meeting, the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, the 28th ASEAN+3 Summit, the 19th East Asia Summit, and the 5th RCEP Summit.

At the 47th ASEAN Summit, leaders will review the bloc’s cooperation outcomes in 2025 under the theme “ASEAN 2025: Inclusive and Sustainable Future”, and set directions for building the ASEAN Community in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. Discussions will focus on strengthening ASEAN’s centrality, enhancing the effectiveness of its mechanisms, and advancing strategic cooperation in political-security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars.

After nearly six decades of formation and development, ASEAN continues to stand as a beacon of regional cooperation and multilateralism. The bloc has maintained strong momentum and achieved concrete results, notably through the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the official admission of Timor-Leste as the 11th member.

Economic connectivity within and beyond the region has deepened, with an expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with key partners such as China, the Republic of Korea, India, and Canada. ASEAN has proactively adapted to new global trends by establishing frameworks such as the Digital Economy Framework Agreement, the ASEAN Digital Master Plan, and the ASEAN Power Grid.

ASEAN mechanisms continue to receive attention and participation from major partners, underscoring ASEAN’s ability to foster unity, adaptability, and balance in external relations, and reaffirming its central role in regional architecture.

The year 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community’s establishment and the final year of implementing the ASEAN Community Blueprints 2025. To prepare for the next phase, ASEAN has adopted the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and four complementary strategic plans on political-security, economic, socio-cultural, and connectivity cooperation, with the theme of building “a resilient, dynamic, innovative, and people-centered ASEAN.”

For Vietnam, ASEAN membership holds strategic importance in ensuring peace, security, expanding development space, and elevating national standing. Over 30 years of active engagement, Vietnam has affirmed itself as a responsible and indispensable member with significant contributions to the bloc’s unity and progress.

Looking ahead, Vietnam aims to contribute more proactively to strengthen ASEAN’s solidarity, resilience, and strategic autonomy, while upholding its central role in the evolving regional and global order. This commitment aligns with the country’s broader goal of ensuring a peaceful and stable environment for development and mobilising resources to fulfill socio-economic objectives.
