Vietnamese Party leader’s passing grabs international headlines
VOV.VN - Major news agencies around the world made wide coverage of Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s passing, emphasizing the Party leader’s role in building the Communist Party of Vietnam, preventing corruption and enhancing Vietnam’s position in the international arena.
Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong passed away at the age of 80. It also published a number of pictures illustrating the General Secretary’s activities at important events.
Granma newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of Cuba, reported that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, a faithful friend of Cuba, passed away due to his old age and serious illness, despite being treated diligently by doctors and wholeheartedly cared for by his family.
The Cuba News Agency (ACN) said on July 19 that, upon hearing the news of the Party leader’s passing, delegates to the Cuban National Assembly of People’s Power observed a minute of silence to commemorate the leader.
Russia’s TASS news agency published an article on July 19 highlighting General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s revolutionary cause, as well as his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hanoi. During the meeting, Trong proposed more measures to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.
TASS also posted an article on the main page emphasizing Trong’s role in the fight against corruption of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The BelTA news agency of Belarus reported the death of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, affirming that he was the second person in modern Vietnamese history that held the highest position in the Party and the State (2018-2021).
Belarus Today quoted Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, as saying the development of modern Vietnam is closely linked to the style of that outstanding politician.
Lukashenko noted that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s efforts in reforming the Party, strengthening the Party’s role in society and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of workers have been widely acknowledged around the world.
Meanwhile, Reuters highlighted the leadership role of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong over the past decade, when Vietnam recorded rapid economic growth and enhanced relations with both China and the US through its bamboo diplomacy policy.
It reported that in less than a year, Trong received leaders of major world powers in Hanoi, including US President Joe Biden, Chinese Party leader and President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Vietnam elevated its ties with the US, China, Australia, and Japan on these occasions.
The Washington Post ran an article reviewing the legacy of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, emphasizing that in recent years, Trong has been known for his signature anti-corruption campaign, causing many high-ranking officials to resign or be prosecuted for corruption and wrongdoings.
Under the leadership of the Party leader, Vietnam has developed a warmer relationship with former foe USA, in the context that Washington is seeking closer ties with Vietnam to develop a network of partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Many US companies have chosen Vietnam as an important partner in their effort to diversify the supply chain.
According to the Financial Times, as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (since 2011) and President (2018-2021), Nguyen Phu Trong played a central role in Vietnam’s economic development. It reported that Vietnam has attracted billions of dollars in foreign investment from global companies, becoming an important link in the supply chain.
