Vietnam vows to realise climate commitments

VOV.VN - Vietnam will pool all resources, both at home and abroad, to realise its net zero emissions commitments by 2050, said Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha.

Ha was speaking at a meeting with Chris Taylor, senior economist at the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, and Tibor Stelbaczky, Principal Adviser on Energy Diplomacy of the European Union, in Hanoi on April 17.

He thanked the British Government, the EU and the International Partners Group (IPG) for adopting a political declaration on establishing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with Vietnam.

Vietnam considers JETP as a key channel to receive technological and financial support from developed countries and financial institutions for just energy transition in the country, he said.

He briefed his guests on the Vietnam national power development plan VIII, and expected that the EU and the UK would share experiences and technologies in clean energy transition, develop smart grids, increase the proportion of renewable energy, and promote energy storage technology at a cost suitable to the level of economic development in the country.

The Deputy PM voiced his support for an initiative to establish the JETP Secretariat, and proposed that the EU and the UK support Vietnam in completing the legal framework, mechanisms and policies, and at the same time, choosing renewable energy and green energy projects to solve problems regarding credit, technology, and governance.

Adviser Tibor Stelbaczky, for his part, highly appreciated Vietnam’s political commitments on green transformation as well as the implementation of JETP, emphasizing the partnership’s role in achieving the set goals.

He hoped that the JETP Secretariat would soon be established to examine comments and draw up plans for JETP implementation. He stressed that there should be a strong commitment from the parties in terms of resources and technology, as well as mutual support in energy transition and green transition.

Meanwhile, Christ Taylor said the UK is willing to share experience and assist Vietnam in JETP implementation. He also emphasized the need for a harmonized policy to address challenges, and said the UK would continue to promote investment in Vietnam in the coming time.

The UK and the EU are ready to assist Vietnam with technical expertise, technology and methods of mobilizing necessary resources from global partners to realise its climate action, he said.
