Vietnam urges full implementation of Gaza peace plan
VOV.VN - Vietnam has called for the full implementation of the Gaza peace plan, urging all parties to exercise restraint, intensify diplomatic and mediation efforts, protect civilians and ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid.
The appeal was made by Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, on October 15. Drawing on Vietnam’s own experience of war, he highlighted the lasting human cost of conflict and the importance of reconciliation, healing and rebuilding trust.
Ambassador Viet recounted Vietnam’s 500-day campaign to search for, recover and bury the remains of fallen soldiers nationwide, including those of 731 fallen soldiers in Ho Chi Minh City recently. He noted that the end of hostilities does not erase the consequences of war, whose wounds can endure across generations and make the path towards reconciliation and recovery long and arduous.
He observed that this experience was not unique to Vietnam, but reflected the realities facing the Middle East today, where crises are becoming increasingly interconnected. Against this backdrop, he urged the parties concerned to exercise the utmost restraint and step up diplomatic engagement and mediation to prevent further escalation.
He also called for all commitments under the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict to be fully honoured, with the legitimate rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people safeguarded throughout efforts to stabilise and rebuild the territory.
On broader regional issues, Vietnam underscored the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states and upholding international law. Maritime security and safety, in particular, must be ensured in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The ambassador further emphasised the need to comply with international humanitarian law, protect civilians, humanitarian personnel and civilian infrastructure, and allow humanitarian assistance to reach those in need without obstruction.
Reaffirming Vietnam’s longstanding position, he reiterated the country’s support for the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and Palestine’s full membership of the United Nations. Vietnam also backed a two-State solution, under which an independent and sovereign State of Palestine would be established on the basis of the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living peacefully alongside Israel.
