Vietnam underlines importance of climate action at APEC Leaders’ Meeting session

VOV.VN - Climate change is an urgent global issue that requires determination, political responsibility as well as solidarity of all economies, Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong said at the first session of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting 2023 taking place in San Francisco, USA, on November 16.

Vietnam considers climate change response a priority in national development policies and it strongly commits to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 by reducing methane emissions, protecting forests and converting energy, said Thuong.

According to the President, Vietnam is one of the first three developing countries to engage in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with international partners, and it is introducing a range of solutions, from institution perfection to implementation in practice.

He proposed that APEC and partners increase cooperation programmes on renewable energy and green industries, develop ecological agriculture and resource recovery, and promote social security and just transition.

He called on developed countries and international partners to increase sharing of scientific and technological achievements and financial contributions, and at the same time urgently put the loss and damage fund into operation to support developing and underdeveloped countries in responding to climate change.

In his view, the global financial system needs to improve its ability to provide green finance and effectively mobilize resources from the private sector.

It’s time all economies realized the historical commitments they have made to protect the Earth and future generations, stressed the president.

Leaders of other APEC economies welcomed Thuong’s practical proposals and they pledged to support Vietnam’s efforts towards achieving the goal of net zero emissions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The first session of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting themed “Sustainability, Climate, and Just Energy Transitions” was chaired by US President Joe Biden.

Colombian President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, and Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal were invited to the meeting.
