Francis McFall, Speaker of the House of Lords, made the statement while receiving Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long in London on November 22.
He shared difficulties faced by Vietnam in combating COVID-19 and spoke highly of the country’s efforts in the fight.
For his part, ambassador Long recalled major milestones in bilateral relations, including the release of the joint statement on the Vietnam – UK Strategic Partnership and the signing of the UK – Vietnam free trade agreement (UKVFTA).
The two sides reached important agreements during Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s recent UK trip for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Scotland. The two sides agreed to prioritise cooperation in science-technology, renewable energy development and green finance.
Ambassador Long suggested that the UK House of Lords assist Vietnam in implementing key cooperation programmes and improving its legal capacity. He also suggested that the legislative bodies of the two countries promote visit exchanges in the near future, especially when the two sides will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2023.
