Vietnam supports multilateralism, UN’s role in addressing global issues

VOV.VN - Vietnam strongly supports multilateralism and the United Nations’ central role in global governance and in coordinating efforts to address common challenges, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang told Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Meeting with the UN leader in Geneva, Switzerland on February 27, Quang suggested that the two sides continue to promote cooperation by realizing major cooperation orientations in line with their priorities, including the results of the Secretary-General’s recent Vietnam visit.

Guterres for his part recalled his deep impressions of his visit to Vietnam in November 2022, and affirmed he would continue to make efforts to promote the good cooperative relationship between the United Nations and Vietnam.

Deputy PM Tran Luu Quang is in Geneva for the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council of which Vietnam is a member.

While staying in Geneva, the Vietnamese leader met Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defense Michael Martin. Quang suggested that the two sides maintain delegation exchanges at all levels and that the Irish Government create more favourable conditions for more Vietnamese goods to enter the Irish market.

Both sides exchanged views on directions to foster future cooperation, especially in the fields of economy, trade and investment in order to bring practical benefits for their people and businesses.

Martin affirmed that the Irish Government wishes to further promote cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of economy and trade to match the development momentum of the two countries’ relations.

The two officials also affirmed that Vietnam and Ireland will continue to strengthen cooperation and support each other at multilateral forums, including the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Meeting with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto, Deputy PM Tran Luu Quang stressed that Vietnam attaches great importance to forge the traditional friendship and good cooperation with Venezuela. He suggested that the two sides promote exchanges of delegations at all levels to increase political trust, and effectively implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

Minister Yvan Gil Pinto for his part affirmed that the Venezuelan Government wishes to further ramp up cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture and energy on a par with the two countries’ fine political ties and potential.

Meeting with Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeld, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang noted that Vietnam attaches importance to its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Norway.

In order to further foster bilateral relations in the coming time, he suggested that the two sides consider a mechanism of a joint committee on economy and trade, and that Norway, in its capacity as a coordinator for negotiations, speed up negotiations towards signing a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) that is comprised of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the two sides need to further expand cooperation, not only in trade and investment but also in development cooperation, especially clean energy, renewable energy, and a sustainable marine economy, while effectively implementing COP 26 commitments.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeld affirmed that Norway is ready to work with Vietnam to promote bilateral trade and investment to match the two countries’ potential, and at the same time expand cooperation to other fields. He also agreed with Vietnam’s proposals, including increasing bilateral cooperation in the fields of clean energy, renewable energy, and marine economy.

The two sides also agreed to closely coordinate and support each other at international forums, especially when they are both members of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023 – 2025 term.
