Vietnam supports Colombian peace process

VOV.VN - Vietnam supports the peace process in Colombia and expects relevant parties to continue dialogue efforts to address current challenges, a Vietnamese diplomat to the United Nations has said.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the UN, was speaking to Ambassador Guillermo Fernandez De Soto, head of the Colombian Delegation to the UN at the UN Headquarters on April 19.

The two sides exchanged views on the UN Security Council’s activities concerning the implementation of the 2016 peace agreement reached between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Quy voiced Vietnam’s strong support for the peace agreement which he said has acknowledged efforts by parties concerned in taking initiatives in order to stabilize the situation and people’s life in the country.

He expressed his hope that all parties concerned continue dialogue efforts so as to address current challenges, especially through mechanisms established under the peace accord.

Vietnam expects the Government of Colombia and relevant parties will create favourable conditions for the organization of the 2022 presidential election, as well as local people’s engagement in the event, said Quy.  

The diplomat also said Vietnam will work closely with the United Nations and the international community to support the Government of Colombia in promoting peace, security and development in the country.

Vietnam, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021, is currently assuming the role of Presidency of the UNSC in April, 2021.
