Vietnam seeks Algeria’s support for energy security amid Middle East tensions

VOV.VN - Amid escalating Middle East tensions disrupting global energy supplies, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on Algeria to support Vietnam’s energy security during a phone call on March 18 with Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb.

Prime Minister Chinh expressed deep concern over the far-reaching impacts of the Middle East conflict, particularly the risk of oil and gas supply disruptions affecting developing economies, including Vietnam.

In the spirit of solidarity, cooperation, and dialogue, he proposed that Algeria assist Vietnam by supplying crude oil and natural gas, while enhancing the effective implementation of existing energy cooperation agreements between Vietnam’s Petroleum Exploration and Production Corporation (PVEP) and Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach.

Prime Minister Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to strengthen cooperation and support Vietnam in the energy sector, identifying it as a key pillar of bilateral relations. He also commended Vietnam’s constructive, responsible approach to international conflicts and expressed willingness to coordinate with Vietnam in calling for ceasefires, de-escalation, and peaceful solutions globally.

Both leaders highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Chinh’s visit to Algeria in November 2025, during which the two countries upgraded their ties to a Strategic Partnership.

Building on this momentum and their long-standing friendship, the two sides agreed to accelerate the implementation of commitments and soon finalise an action programme to realise the new partnership framework.

Priority areas for cooperation span investment, trade, oil and gas exploration and refining, renewable energy, agriculture including the cultivation of Vietnamese crops in Algeria, defence, science and technology, digital transformation, and cultural exchange.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Chinh conveyed greetings and invitations from Party General Secretary To Lam to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and other senior Algerian leaders to visit Vietnam. He also reaffirmed Vietnam’s appreciation for the longstanding solidarity and support extended by Algeria across generations.

Prime Minister Ghrieb, in turn, conveyed President Tebboune’s regards to Vietnam’s senior leadership and reiterated Algeria’s strong commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in a substantive and effective manner.
