Vietnam reaffirms commitment to promoting gender equality at UN session

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese diplomat highlighted the country’s recent progress in gender equality and reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to advancing gender equality at a recent United Nations session in New York, USA.

The annual session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) held from June 17-19 discussed its annual report, reviewed progress on the 2022 - 2025 strategic plan, and considered the draft strategic plan for 2026 - 2029.

Sharing the achievements, Minister-Councilor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, deputy permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, noted that Vietnamese women make up 30% of National Assembly deputies and 28% of business leaders. The country’s global ranking in gender equality improved from 87th in 2021 to 72nd in 2024.

He also emphasised the significance of adopting the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security, with strong support from UN Women.

According to the diplomat, the session is an important opportunity for countries and UN Women to review achievements and reaffirm their commitment to advancing gender equality. He underscored the need to take into account the specific conditions of developing countries, especially in ensuring fair financial access and capacity building.

He proposed bridging the digital divide, enhancing women's leadership in the digital economy and AI governance, mobilising sustainable financing for gender equality initiatives, and promoting women’s engagement and leadership across all sectors.

In her opening remarks, UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous stressed the importance of promoting gender equality and empowering women, especially in a global context marked by challenges such as conflict, climate change, and growing disparities in financial access between men and women.

She affirmed UN Women’s commitment to working with member states and stakeholders to implement global initiatives, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and Sustainable Development Goal 5.

During the session, many countries called for increased investment in key areas such as education, health care, and the economy to empower women more effectively.
