Vietnam reaffirms commitment to children protection in armed conflict
VOV.VN - A diplomat voiced Vietnam’s strong condemnation of all acts of violence against children and called for an immediate end to violations of children’s rights in armed conflict, during a United Nations Security Council debate on June 25.

Speaking at an open debate of the UNSC on the topic of children and armed conflict at its headquarters in New York, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, emphasised the importance of preventing, tackling the root causes of conflict, and integrating child protection into all phases of peace processes and peacekeeping operations.
On this occasion, the Ambassador also recalled Vietnam’s significant contributions during its 2020–2021 term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, including promoting Resolution 2573 on the protection of essential civilian infrastructure, a Presidential Statement on addressing the consequences of landmines, and leading discussions on the protection of women and children in armed conflict.
Presenting the latest report by the UN Secretary-General, Virginia Gamba, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, highlighted that 2024 recorded over 41,000 grave violations against children, a 25% increase from 2023 and the highest number since the UN's monitoring and reporting mechanism was established in 2005.
Delegates expressed serious concern over the rise in incidents of sexual violence and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. Many called for all parties to comply with international law and Security Council resolutions, strengthen prevention measures, enhance international cooperation, provide humanitarian assistance, and invest more resources in child protection and reintegration programmes.
