Vietnam ready to share irrigation development experience with Senegal
VOV.VN - Vietnam has acquired extensive experience in irrigation development and water resource management, and stays ready to share experience in this field with Senegal.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long was speaking during a working session with Senegal’s Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dieye in capital Dakar on July 22. The working session took place as part of National Assembly Chairman Trawn Thanh man’s ongoing working visit to Senegal.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Vietnam has over 830 billion cubic meters of surface water annually, 7.8 million hectares of controlled irrigation area, and thousands of large and small-scale irrigation works serving both agriculture and daily life.
The country has also effectively implemented water-saving irrigation models, treated saline groundwater, and developed rural water supply systems, especially in flood-prone areas such as the Mekong Delta.
Deputy Prime Minister affirmed Vietnam’s willingness to share its expertise with Senegal in areas such as irrigation planning, project development, capacity building, and the transfer of water-saving technologies.
Vietnam also proposed supporting pilot models of rotational irrigation and introducing simple, low-cost water filtration technologies suitable for remote and rural areas.
Dieye, for his part, welcomed the cooperation proposal and expressed interest in learning from Vietnam’s experience, particularly in managing transboundary water resources. He also noted Senegal’s readiness to share its own experience in water diplomacy and management of the Senegal River basin.
Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation through practical measures such as dispatching technical experts, exchanging students and researchers, sharing data, and implementing drought and flood monitoring and early warning systems.
Deputy PM Long said the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam would collaborate with its relevant agencies of Senegal in establishing a bilateral working group on irrigation and water management.
Located in West Africa, Senegal possesses an important river system, notably the Senegal River, which flows through multiple countries. This makes Senegal a key country in the management of transboundary river basins. For many years, it has actively promoted regional cooperation to ensure long-term water security.
