Vietnam proposes key directions for strengthening ASEAN-US cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh outlined four major directions for advancing ASEAN–US cooperation toward greater depth, effectiveness, and sustainability in the coming years, at the 13th ASEAN–US Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 26.
Prime Minister Chinh emphasised that the United States is among ASEAN’s most comprehensive strategic partners, with strong commitments to regional cooperation. Building on this foundation, he proposed key directions for enhancing future collaboration.
He highlighted the need to strengthen economic, trade, and investment connectivity, aiming for balanced, harmonious, and sustainable trade relations that support both regional and global supply chains.
In addition, he proposed promoting digital transformation, innovation, and energy security, including the development of energy infrastructure and peaceful cooperation in nuclear energy, to step up shared goals of green and sustainable development.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of deepening cooperation in cybersecurity and combating transnational crime, citing the US initiative on countering online scams and Vietnam’s proposal to improve international collaboration in fugitive tracking as critical frameworks for joint efforts in these areas.
Finally, he underlined the necessity of intensifying collaboration to maintain regional peace, security, and stability, noting that both ASEAN and the US share responsibilities in preserving a peaceful, rules-based order, particularly in the East Sea, known internationally as South China Sea.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister reaffirmed ASEAN’s principled position on the East Sea, stressing the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means based on international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), for the benefit of all nations and peoples in the region.
He also congratulated US President Donald Trump on the country’s recent achievements and commended his diplomatic initiatives in promoting dialogue and peaceful resolution of global conflicts, including his role in supporting Cambodia and Thailand in signing a joint peace declaration earlier the same day in Kuala Lumpur, alongside Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair.
For his part, President Donald Trump reaffirmed that Southeast Asia holds a special place in US policy toward the Indo-Pacific region, and underscored that the United States remains a trusted and reliable partner of ASEAN. He expressed the US’s desire to deepen cooperation with ASEAN not only in economy, trade, energy, technology, and artificial intelligence, but also in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.
ASEAN leaders praised the US’s active role and contributions to regional cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms, particularly in dialogue promotion and confidence building. They also noted the impressive progress in ASEAN–US relations, with two-way trade surpassing US$453 billion in 2024, accounting for 11.8% of ASEAN’s total trade. The United States is ASEAN’s second-largest trading partner and the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI).
ASEAN leaders welcomed the completion of the ASEAN–US Plan of Action for 2021–2025, featuring numerous joint initiatives across political-security, transnational crime prevention, maritime security, trade, investment, transportation, agriculture, and science and technology. They also thanked the US for its technical support in developing the next-generation ASEAN Single Window mechanism.
At the conclusion of the summit, ASEAN and US leaders adopted the “ASEAN–US Joint Vision Statement to Promote Stronger, Safer, and More Prosperous ASEAN and America,”, setting the strategic orientation for ASEAN–US cooperation in the new phase.
