Vietnam promote cooperation with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Ambassador to Venezuela Vu Trong My on January 24 presented his credentials to Dame Susan Dougan, Governor-General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, officially commencing his tenure as the Ambassador of Vietnam to the island country.
In her remarks during the meeting following the presentation of credentials, Dougan congratulated Vietnam on its development achievements and expressed a strong desire to enhance multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, particularly as the two countries commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations (December 1995 –2025).
She warmly congratulated My on his appointment and wished him success in advancing Vietnam–Saint Vincent and the Grenadines relations to new heights.
My for his part pledged to do his utmost to promote the friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries. He reaffirmed Vietnam’s open foreign policy and its commitment to strengthening its relations with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Receiving the ambassador at another reception, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, Chairman of the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), expressed admiration for President Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam’s struggle for independence and unification, and its achievements in the reform era. He emphasized the desire to establish a friendly and cooperative relationship between the Unity Labour Party and the Communist Party of Vietnam.
During his visit, My also met with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Frederick Stephenson. He requested that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines soon recognize Vietnam’s market economy status and support its candidacy for the position of judge on the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for the 2026–2035 term. He also extended an invitation to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to attend the signing ceremony of the UN Convention on Cybercrime, to be held in Hanoi in 2025.
Stephenson highlighted Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ positive evaluation of Vietnam’s proposals and promised to provide a response soon. He also expressed a desire for the two countries to strengthen cooperation at multilateral forums and international organizations. He called for negotiations to finalize and sign a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, which would create a legal framework for boosting bilateral relations.
