Vietnam prioritises partnership with the Republic of Korea
VOV.VN - Vietnam considers the Republic of Korea (RoK) as an important, long-term partner and one of the top priority partners in its foreign policy, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue told Park Byung-seug, Speaker of the RoK National Assembly during their online talks on June 23.
Vietnam attaches great importance to and wishes to develop friendly cooperative relations with the Republic of Korea, Hue stressed.
He said Vietnam highly appreciates and believes that the RoK’s New Southern Policy will create great opportunities for further strengthening the Vietnam-RoK Strategic Cooperation Partnership.
He welcomed the RoK side’s proposal to lift bilateral relations to a level of the comprehensive strategic partnership to mark 30 years of their diplomacy in 2022.
Hue expressed his elation at the blossoming of the economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, noting given the current context RoK investors consider Vietnam as an attractive investment environment and are pouring investment into the nation.
Both leaders were aware that balancing bilateral trade is one of the important factors in the relationship between the two countries.
Speaker Park affirmed that Vietnam is one of the Rok’s important partners, saying about more than 8,000 Korean businesses are operating in Vietnam. According to Park, Samsung has developed a plan to build a research and development Center in Vietnam, and LG is also keen to do the same.
NA Chairman Hue suggested that Vietnam and the RoK continue to strengthen connectivity between the two economies on the basis of the signed free trade agreements, while promoting trade in order to complement each other’s strengths.
He expressed hope that the RoK will create favorable conditions for Vietnamese goods, especially agricultural products, to enter its market in an effort to balance bilateral trade and look forward to raising their trade to US$100 billion soon.
He welcomed Samsung’s plan to invest in its research and development center in Hanoi to develop the supply chain of supporting industries in Vietnam, considering this a good direction for promoting bilateral trade.
The National Assembly and Government of Vietnam will create favourable conditions for RoK to overcome difficulties and operate efficiently in the country, Hue assured Park.
The Vietnamese legislator thanked the RoK for providing COVID-19 medical supplies, pushed for stronger vaccine cooperation under the COVAX Facility, and proposed piloting a vaccine passport scheme in tourism and other areas.
During the online talks, both sides stressed the need to increase cooperation between the two legislative bodies, especially in the area of legislation, through regular contacts and visit exchanges.
Vietnam always promotes its role as a responsible member of the international community and actively contributes to peace, stability and development globally, including maintaining peace on the Korean peninsula, Hue stressed.
