Vietnam inaugurates centre to train elite police for UN peacekeeping missions
VOV.VN - Vietnam on January 9 inaugurated a new training and capacity-building centre for the country’s United Nations (UN) peacekeeping police in Hung Yen province.
The handover ceremony was jointly organised by the Ministry of Public Security (MoPS) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MoAE).
Speaking at the ceremony, Lieutenant General Pham The Tung, MoPS Deputy Minister and head of the National Steering Committee for UN Peacekeeping Police Deployment, noted that since 2022, Vietnam’s police force has expanded its participation in UN peacekeeping, moving from individual contributions to full unit deployment.
Six operational teams of Vietnamese police officers have served in complex UN missions, including South Sudan, Abyei, the Central African Republic, and the UN headquarters in New York. A seventh team is scheduled to head for the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in January 2026.
The establishment of Vietnam Police Peacekeeping Unit No. 1 in January 2024 marked a major step in professionalizing and modernizing Vietnam’s peacekeeping force. The unit has been upgraded to Level 2 and is under consideration for Level 3 status to meet UN operational standards. The force has received praise from the UN, the international community, and domestic leaders for its performance.
The new centre, designed for training elite officers capable of operating independently in international environments, represents a strategic milestone in Vietnam’s efforts to modernize its security forces and deepen integration into international peacekeeping operations. Officials emphasised that the peacekeeping force must serve as a model of excellence and uphold the high standards of Vietnam’s police in both domestic and international contexts.
At the ceremony, acting on behalf of the State President, the Ministry of Public Security also announced the deployment of three officers to UNISFA in Abyei.
For his part, MoAE Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep highlighted the close cooperation between ministries and the provincial authorities in making the centre operational. He expressed confidence that the centre would become a premier facility for training Vietnam’s peacekeeping police in line with UN standards.
The handover of the 57-hectare campus of Thuy Loi (Water Recourses) University – Pho Hien facility to the Ministry of Public Security to establish a United Nations peacekeeping police training and capacity-building centre follows Decision No. 5500/QD-BNNMT dated Dec. 18, 2025, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. The site allows Vietnam to build a state-of-the-art training centre that meets UN standards for peacekeeping operations.
