Four more Vietnamese officers deployed to UN Peacekeeping Missions
VOV.VN - The Ministry of National Defence on December 31 held a ceremony to present the State President’s decisions appointing four officers of the Vietnam People’s Army to serve in United Nations peacekeeping missions in the Central African Republic and at the United Nations Liaison Office for Peace and Security.
Notably, three of the four officers selected for this deployment are women. Among them is Lieutenant Colonel Vu Thi Lien from the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, who has been appointed as a security and defence policy expert at the UN Liaison Office for Peace and Security in Brussels, Belgium. She is the first Vietnamese female officer to be selected for a position at a UN liaison office, marking a significant milestone in Vietnam’s deepening and increasingly professional engagement in UN peacekeeping activities.
The remaining officers will take up key roles at the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), including military public information officer, contingent-owned equipment staff officer, and staff officer for training.
Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, Deputy Minister of National Defence, congratulated the four officers and commended the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations and relevant units for their thorough preparation, training, and personnel development.
He noted that to date, Vietnam has successfully deployed more than 1,300 officers and personnel to UN peacekeeping missions and UN headquarters. These personnel, selected from among the most capable and dedicated members of the armed forces, have consistently earned high evaluations from the United Nations, host missions, and international partners.
General Thang urged the new officers to uphold the traditions and values of the Vietnam People’s Army, demonstrate professionalism, strong expertise, and adaptability in their duties, and effectively handle complex situations in multinational environments.
He also emphasised the importance of strictly adhering to the Party’s and State’s foreign policy, complying with UN regulations and host country laws, ensuring safety and security, and maintaining exemplary conduct both on and off duty.
The officers were encouraged to promote Vietnam’s culture, people, and national image, contributing to the positive reputation and credibility of the Vietnam People’s Army on the international stage.
The continued deployment of Vietnamese officers to UN peacekeeping missions reflects Vietnam’s consistent policy of proactive and responsible international integration, as well as its commitment to contributing to global peace and security. It also underscores the growing role and standing of the Vietnam People’s Army in international peacekeeping efforts, particularly the expanding participation of female officers in high-level and specialised positions.
