Vietnam gets support for hosting the signing of UN Convention against Cybercrime

VOV.VN - The Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, in collaboration with the Australian Mission and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), co-hosted a seminar in New York on February 19 towards the signing ceremony of the UN Convention on Cybercrime to be held in Hanoi.

More than 100 delegates from UN member states and relevant international organizations attended the gathering.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that the recent adoption of the UN Convention on Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention) is of great significance in the context of increasingly complex global cybersecurity threats that directly impact the security and development of all nations. The convention, he said, establishes a global legal framework for international cooperation in combating cybercrime.

The Vietnamese representative expressed gratitude to all countries that supported the selection of Hanoi as the location for the convention’s signing at the UN General Assembly session in December 2024. He reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to closely collaborating with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the UN Office of Legal Affairs, and member states to ensure the convention's swift ratification and effective implementation.

Representatives from both UN offices echoed Giang’s statement and pledged continued support for Vietnam, while providing updates on the negotiation process, the key contents of the convention, and the necessary procedural steps leading up to the signing ceremony in Hanoi.

At the event, a Vietnamese inter-agency delegation, including representatives from the Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of National Defense, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, updated participants on the preparations for the signing ceremony in Hanoi this year. They highlighted that in addition to the official signing event and discussions, there would be a series of activities to enhance dialogue and cooperation among governments, businesses, and relevant organizations in addressing cybersecurity challenges.

Through these activities, Vietnam aims to reaffirm its role as a responsible member and trusted partner of the international community, that actively promotes multilateralism and contributes to shaping global digital governance frameworks while ensuring cybersecurity and national sovereignty in cyberspace.

Representatives from various countries and regional groups commended Vietnam’s proactive efforts in preparing for the signing ceremony. They pledged to expedite internal procedures for signing and ratifying the convention and expressed strong support for Vietnam in successfully hosting the event in Hanoi in 2025.

The UN Convention on Cybercrime was officially adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 24, 2024, representing a collective effort by all UN member states, with Vietnam playing an active role in the negotiation process. For the first time, such a global multilateral treaty on an important issue will be signed in Vietnam.
