Vietnam expects US support in developing semiconductor chip supply chain

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, while receiving US Trade Representative Katherine Tai in Washington DC on September 19, proposed that the US assist Vietnam in developing a semiconductor chip supply chain.

Chinh thanked Tai for her contributions to the development of Vietnam – US relations, and asked the two sides to work closely towards quickly realizing the agreements reached by the two countries’ senior leaders.

Among those agreements, the US will promote the roadmap for recognizing Vietnam’s market economy status, further open the market for its goods such as textiles, footwear, and agricultural products, properly consider Vietnamese businesses’ interests, and not introduce trade defense measures to Vietnamese goods on the basis of ensuring balance, equality and mutual benefit.

The PM also proposed that the two sides create breakthroughs in science - technology, innovation, and education – training cooperation.

Trade Representative Katherine Tai for her part affirmed that the US considers Vietnam an important partner in the region, and it desires to continue promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

The US Trade Representative will play a role in fostering relations between the two countries in the coming time, she assured her guest.

Tai briefed Chinh on ongoing negotiations of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), and hoped Vietnam would actively engage in the process towards concluding the negotiations soon, so as to bring common benefits to countries and people in the region.

Meeting with Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo on the same day, Chinh requested that the Department of Commerce support stronger economic and trade cooperation, encourage US high-tech firms to do business in Vietnam, and increase delegation exchanges.

He also proposed that the two sides ramp up cooperation in climate change response, green growth, and renewable energy development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was in the US for the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
