Vietnam elections grab regional headlines

VOV.VN - Regional and international media outlets on March 15 highlighted the significance of the elections for the National Assembly and local People’s Councils in Vietnam, describing the vote as an important political event as Vietnam continues to pursue its socio-economic development goals for the next stage.

According to a report by Bernama, the national news agency of Malaysia, the elections took place at a time when Vietnam is accelerating efforts to refine its policy framework to support long-term development strategies.

The article said the nationwide election is not only an occasion for voters to exercise their civic rights and responsibilities by choosing representatives for the National Assembly and People’s Councils for the new term, but also a concrete step in implementing the resolution adopted at the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, particularly in relation to personnel planning and governance responsibilities across different levels of government.

Bernama also highlighted that nearly four decades after launching the Đổi mới (Renewal) process, Vietnam has achieved significant and historically important progress in multiple areas of social and economic life. The report also noted the country’s ongoing efforts to streamline its administrative apparatus and improve the efficiency of the political system.

Meanwhile, The Star published several updates and analyses on the elections, describing them as an important political event demonstrating the people’s role in exercising state power through the selection of their representatives.

Malaysian media also paid particular attention to Vietnam’s political stability and economic development orientation, noting that the National Assembly plays a crucial role in passing laws and shaping national development policies.

In China, the state news agency Xinhua News Agency emphasised the scale and organisation of the elections, reporting that nearly 79 million Vietnamese voters participated in choosing 500 deputies to the 16th National Assembly, while also electing representatives to People’s Councils at different administrative levels.

Similarly, Japan-based Nikkei Asia described the elections as an opportunity for citizens to select representatives who would voice their interests and concerns.

The publication noted that around 500 deputies would be elected from 864 candidates, forming a new legislature that would continue to perform key functions including lawmaking, overseeing government activities and deciding on major national policies.

According to Nikkei Asia, active participation by voters could strengthen representation, reinforce social consensus and support the implementation of socio-economic development policies aimed at boosting growth and improving living standards.

Beyond regional outlets, other international media organisations such as Sputnik and China Central Television, along with several Western news agencies, have also reported on Vietnam’s election day.

Many reports highlighted the event as a major political milestone often referred to in Vietnam as a “festival of the people”, emphasising both its scale and several new improvements in the organisation and conduct of the election process.
