VOV.VN - The United Nations General Assembly has elected 14 member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, including Vietnam, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The voting took place at the UN Headquarters in New York on October 11, and according to UN WebTV, Vietnam received 145 out of 189 votes.

The 14 new members of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term are Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Georgia, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Morocco, Romania, South Africa, Sudan and Vietnam.

Earlier, Vietnam unanimously received support from ASEAN as the bloc’s only candidate for this position, and it was also the only Asian candidate of the Francophone community.

Becoming the UN Human Rights Council member has shown the international community’s recognition of Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in this field.

After the results of the voting were announced, Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu, head of the Vietnamese delegation, said that this testifies to Vietnam’s rising position and reputation in the international arena.

Vietnam, as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, will directly contribute to human rights protection and promotion in the next three years.

Through dialogue and cooperation, it will promote priority areas, including protecting vulnerable groups and ensuring human rights in responding to global issues.

This is the second time Vietnam has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council. In 2013, it was elected to the UN body for the first time for the 2014-2016 term with 184 out of 192 votes, the highest among the 14 members of the body..
