Vietnam, Cuba leaders discuss Party Congress outcomes, pledge closer ties

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Cuba have reaffirmed their special and exemplary relationship and agreed to further deepen comprehensive cooperation following Vietnam’s 14th National Party Congress, their leaders said.

The agreement was reached during a phone call on January 26 between Vietnam’s Party General Secretary To Lam and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel.

First Party Secretary Diaz-Canel congratulated the Communist Party of Vietnam on the successful organisation of its 14th National Party Congress, and extended congratulations to the newly elected Central Committee, the Politburo and General Secretary To Lam on their appointment to leadership positions for the new term.

He praised what he described as Vietnam’s historic achievements over nearly 40 years of Đổi mới (Renewal), saying the experience has laid a solid foundation for Vietnam to enter a new stage of development and offers valuable lessons for Cuba’s ongoing economic reform.

The Cuban leader also commended the leadership, vision and steadfastness of the Communist Party of Vietnam, led by General Secretary To Lam, and expressed confidence that Vietnam would achieve its development goals for 2030 and 2045.

On behalf of the Communist Party and people of Vietnam, Party General To Lam thanked the Cuban leader and the Party and State of Cuba for their close attention to the 14th Party Congress and for their warm congratulations.

He told the Cuban leader that the Congress was a success and fulfilled its historic mission. It reviewed the implementation of the 13th Party Congress Resolution, assessed 40 years of Đổi mới and the implementation of the Party Platform and socio-economic development strategies, and set goals, orientations and tasks for the next five years, as well as decisions of strategic significance for Vietnam’s future in a new development era.

He recalled that the Congress reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to national independence and socialism under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and adopted a people-centred approach that views the people as the subject, goal, driving force and resource of development.

For the first time, the Congress supplemented the “theory of renewal policy” as an important ideological pillar alongside continued adherence to Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, said the Vietnamese leader.

The Congress also identified the establishment of a new growth model based on the knowledge economy, digital economy, green economy and circular economy, while fully promoting the role of all economic sectors.

Party General Secretary To Lam noted the Congress attached special importance to building a clean, strong Party and political system, and to creating a streamlined, effective and efficient state apparatus.

On foreign affairs, he said the Congress affirmed that diplomacy and international integration, in conjunction with defence and security, remain key and regular tasks, while consistently pursuing an independent, self-reliant foreign policy of peace, friendship, cooperation and development.

To Lam reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to its special and exemplary friendship with Cuba, and is ready to do everything possible to further consolidate traditional solidarity and expand and enhance bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples and for peace and development in each region and globally.

Vietnam is also willing to share experience with Cuba in its renewal process and socialist construction, he said.

Diaz-Canel also reiterated that the Party, State and people of Cuba give top priority to relations with Vietnam and are determined to further deepen comprehensive cooperation, building on the valuable legacy and close solidarity between the two countries’ peoples established by leader Fidel Castro and president Ho Chi Minh.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive development of bilateral relations across many fields and with the implementation of high-level agreements, and agreed to direct ministries and agencies of both sides to coordinate closely and effectively implement bilateral mechanisms, plans and cooperation programmes at all levels and across all channels.
