Vietnam considers US one of its most important partners, says President

VOV.VN - Vietnam considers the United States one of its most important partners, affirmed State President Vo Van Thuong during his reception for US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper in Hanoi on June 5.

He hailed positive developments of the Vietnam – US comprehensive partnership in recent times and said Vietnam attaches great importance to strengthening its comprehensive partnership with the US.

He recalled the March 2023 phone talk between Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and US President Joe Biden which outlined major orientations for the development of bilateral relations between the two countries in the coming years.

To further deepen the Vietnam - US relations, the President suggested the two sides increase the exchange of delegations and contacts at all levels and promote bilateral cooperation programmes and projects in all fields, so as to bring practical benefits to both countries, and at the same time contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world at large.

Vietnam always creates favourable conditions for US firms to explore investment and business cooperation opportunities in Vietnam, he told the diplomat.

The president suggested that the two sides fully tap into the potential for cooperation in the field of education and training, especially the US educational programmes that have been implemented successfully in Vietnam such as Fulbright University Vietnam.

He also suggested that the two sides further expand defense and security cooperation, including handling war consequences and deploying humanitarian programmes for Agent Orange/dioxin victims in Vietnam.

Ambassador Knapper for his part said President Biden was pleased with the results of the March 2023 phone talk with General Secretary Trong, noting amid global challenges, enhancing US – Vietnam cooperation is important for peace and prosperity in the region and the world.

He briefed his host on the recent visit to Vietnam by a US business delegation, saying US firms are keen to invest in the fields of health care, high technology, and especially education and training. He emphasized that education – training is a major pillar in bilateral cooperation with effective projects successfully undertaken, including the Fulbright University Vietnam model.

The US will continue to work closely with Vietnam towards overcoming war consequences, including dealing with the effects of Agent Orange/dioxin, clearing unexploded bombs and mines, and searching for personnel missing in action, he assured his host.

Vietnam and the US established diplomatic ties on July 11, 1995. The two countries are celebrating 10 years of their comprehensive partnership this year.
