Vietnam committed to sustainable development policy, reaffirms PM

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to sustainable development, which he said is the consistent development policy of the Party and State.

Addressing the 2022 Green Economy Forum and Exhibition (GEFE 2022) in Ho Chi Minh City on November 28, Chinh noted Vietnam has approved the National Green Growth Strategy for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, demonstrating its desires to create a stronger and more effective change in the coming time.

According to the PM, Vietnam does not sacrifice the environment for economic growth alone, and to prove this the country gave a clear and firm commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 at the 26th UN Conference on Climate Change in Glasgow in 2021. It is also formulating a national power development plan for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2045, aiming to promote the development of renewable energy sources, make use of agro-forestry by-products in power generation, and rationally develop gas power sources using liquefied natural gas (LNG), in order to bring practical benefits to the country, localities, businesses and people.

“We are fully aware that, on the path to green growth and sustainable development, Vietnam is not alone. Vietnam highly appreciates the leading role of the European Union in its efforts to transform a green economy for a sustainable future. Vietnam always attaches importance to the comprehensive partnership and cooperation with the EU, and wishes to further deepen the relationship between the two sides in the coming time,” said Chinh.

The PM took the occasion to assure that the Government of Vietnam would continue to create all the best possible conditions for the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham Vietnam) and its members to invest in priority areas with a range of special incentives such as high technology, information technology, supporting industries, smart agriculture, environmental protection, renewable energy, infrastructure construction, human resources training, science-technology development, research-development, and innovation.

He stated that Vietnam would continue to improve its investment environment, reduce input costs for businesses, and encourage the green economy, digital transformation and circular economy, coupled with promoting public-private cooperation, diversifying supply chains, products and markets, and encouraging innovation into emerging industries.

In his opinion, investing in Vietnam is not only for economic benefits but also for human development, for the sake of Vietnam – EU friendship. He called on the EU to provide green finance and advanced technology suitable to the socio-economic situation of Vietnam, and at the same time assist Vietnamese businesses to develop on par with European partners, on the basis of win-win and risk sharing principles.

The PM earlier cut the red ribbon inaugurating the exhibition and visiting pavilions displaying green products and technologies, while meeting representatives of leading European businesses and corporations such as Equinor, CIP, Mainstream, Vestas, Airbus, HSBC, Suez, Siemens Gamesa, and Schneider.

Representatives of EU businesses agreed Vietnam has great potential for renewable energy development, and they are willing to pour billions of US dollars into the country’s wind energy sector.
