Vietnam commits actions for sustainable development at Global Gateway Forum

VOV.VN - Vietnam is ready to cooperate with other countries to realise the sustainable development goal through sharing its potential and strengths, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said at the 2023 Global Gateway Forum in Brussels.

Delivering the Vietnamese commitments at the forum on October 25, Ha said overcoming the challenges of climate change requires collective efforts of all countries through sharing resources and experiences, as well as helping to narrow development gaps, noting that, “no country is safe if there is another country that is not safe.”

According to the Vietnamese Deputy PM, climate change is an urgent global issue that requires a global approach to address its various challenges.

“If vaccines are the solution to the COVID-19 pandemic, then green energy and green hydrogen are the solution to climate change,” he stressed.

In order to generate new fuel sources at cheap prices, he suggested developing complete infrastructure for transport, storage, and management of green hydrogen, whilst simultaneously striving to accelerate the technology transfer process to get green hydrogen from renewable energy.

The Deputy PM recalled that Vietnam has signed a memorandum of understanding with the EU on financial support worth EUR500 million to realise the Just Energy Transition Partnership agreement that it reached with the group of seven industrialised nations.

He called on developed countries and the private sector to increase the provision of technology and green finance, provide support in the form of human resource training, and share management experience so that the whole world can achieve the net zero emissions goal by 2050.

Speaking at the forum, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen affirmed that climate change represents a challenge, but also brings about further development opportunities. The EU prioritises mobilising clean technology and renewable energy whilst seeking to encourage private capital along with government resources to contribute to green development globally.

She welcomed the implementation of projects within the framework of the Global Gateway Initiative, including solar energy projects in Vietnam. She revealed that 90 such projects have been undertaken across Asia and Eastern Europe, bringing about huge benefits to the recipients.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, rotating president of the Group of Industrialized Countries (G7), affirmed that the G7 stands ready to accompany the EU in implementing the Global Gateway Initiative.

The Global Gateway Initiative was put forward by the European Commission in 2021 and aimed to mobilise EUR300 billion for infrastructure projects in the 2022 - 2027 period to spur sustainable development and address issues of global concern.
