Vietnam calls for intensified disarmament efforts

VOV.VN - Countries should intensify international efforts on disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in order to address global security challenges and protect the international community’s gains.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations, was speaking at the general debate of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on Disarmament and International Security in New York on October 10.

He described the current international security environment as the most complex in decades, which he said could negatively impact the international community’s joint efforts.

The international community should promote common frameworks to effectively respond to emerging challenges such as cybersecurity and space-related issues, said the Vietnamese diplomat.

In this process, he stressed it is necessary to continue to adhere to the basic principles of international law and the UN Charter, promote peaceful settlement of international disputes, and maintain the central role of multilateralism, while strengthening the global disarmament mechanism.

Ambassador Giang also affirmed Vietnam’s resolve to actively participate in the common work of the First Committee, and at the same time support efforts for a peaceful, stable and developed world.

The First Committee is one of the six main committees of the United Nations General Assembly that consists of representatives of all 193 UN member states. It is tasked with reviewing and debating issues relating to disarmament, threats and challenges to international peace and security, thereby proposing appropriate solutions.
