Vietnam attaches importance to multifaceted cooperation with Malaysia
VOV.VN - State President Vo Van Thuong has affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to strengthening multifaceted cooperation with Malaysia, a leading important partner in ASEAN.
Meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in San Francisco on November 16, Thuong noted with satisfaction the positive development of the Vietnam – Malaysia partnership in all fields through high-level visit exchanges and implementation of cooperation mechanisms.
He proposed that the two sides effectively implement the outcomes of the recent seventh meeting of the Vietnam – Malaysia Joint Committee on bilateral cooperation, and soon complete negotiations towards signing agreements to create a legal framework for stronger cooperation between the two countries.
He expressed hope that the two sides would coordinate closely to promote trade and investment, striving to soon raise their two-way trade turnover to US$18 billion in the coming time. He asked the the Malaysian Government to support Vietnamese businesses in producing and exporting Halal products to the Malaysian market.
The President also expected that Malaysia would expand support for Vietnam in the field of staff training, and expand local cooperation, including establishing a sister city relationship between Hoi An and Melaka.
He requested that Malaysia create conditions for Vietnam to lobby the European Commission to remove the yellow card warning against its seafood products exported to the bloc.
At the same time, he also proposed that the two countries continue to coordinate effectively in repatriating Vietnamese fishermen.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his part acknowledged Thuong’s proposals and affirmed that Malaysia places emphasis on enhancing the multifaceted cooperative relationship with Vietnam.
He highly appreciated Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements in recent times and expressed his desire to promote cooperation with Vietnam in economy, trade, investment, and human resource training.
The two sides vowed to continue to coordinate closely at regional and international forums, strive to maintain ASEAN’s solidarity and central role, and support Laos in fulfilling its role as ASEAN Chair in 2024.
Exchanging views on issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea, the two leaders agreed to support ASEAN’s common viewpoint of seriously implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties and striving to achieve a substantive and effective Code of Conduct in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he is looking forward to receiving President Vo Van Thuong in Kuala Lumpur on an official visit as soon as possible.
The two leaders are in San Francisco, USA, for the APEC Leaders’ Week at the invitation of US President Joe Biden.
